For centuries, richly ornamented robes (khilat or khalat) were bestowed upon nobles, ambassadors, and soldiers as a symbol of beneficence and merit. This illustrated lecture presents the origins of the Central Asian khalat— from the indispensable and practical garment of ancient horse-riding nomads to a status symbol well into the 19th and early 20th centuries.
